History[]
Carl Brinkmann is one of the main characters in the first series of the 2000 AD series Brink. It is set in a dystopian future when hyper-industrialisation and the resulting environmental collapse have meant that humans can no longer live on Earth. Carl was born in a space station or 'Habitat' orbiting Earth in 2061, eleven years before the last humans evacuated the stricken planet. Now the remnants of a once-proud species lives exclusively in these Habitats, and 'investigators' (in effect, police officers) like Carl and his partner Bridget Kurtis must do their best to prevent the omnipresent frustration and unhappiness from manifesting itself as crime.
Carl and Bridget were members of the Habitat Security Division (H.S.D.) on Odette Habitat, but had to travel to Ludmilla Habitat to investigate a mysterious sect which believes that the sun is a giant egg waiting to hatch into a cosmic monstrosity. While conducting his inquiries on Ludmilla, Carl had a vision of an immense eyeball floating in space and staring at him. He believed that it was looking at him for hours, but according to Bridget the incident only lasted a few seconds. It disturbed him so much that he appeared pale, sweating, red-eyed and shaken, leading Bridget to ask if he had been injected with a drug. Shortly afterwards Carl, who obviously didn't have his mind on the job, was hit on the head by an angry trade union member suspected of being connected to the sect and bled to death.
he reader is left with two questions regarding Carl: did he really see the demon-deity known by its worshippers as the Leper Heart shortly before he died? And are his occasional post-mortem appearances to Bridget an indication that she has PTSD, or a sign of something more uncanny going on?
