History[]

Chief Thrower is a character from the 2000 AD strip Harry Twenty on the High Rock. He was the leader of the guards on the High Rock, a huge orbiting prison, and spent most of his time making the lives of prisoners such as Harry Twenty and Genghis Eighteen hell. Thrower did this with the overt approval and encouragement of the prison's Machiavellian ruler, Warden Worldwise, and with the help of subordinates including Guard Pusser. The servile prisoner Twenty-One Toady annoyed him with constant offers of unsolicited 'help', which were mostly rejected.

The first time the strip's readers and its protagonist, Harry, encountered Thrower, he gave Harry a vicious punishment beating for trying to stop another prisoner's summary execution, and for saying his name was 'Harry Thompson' rather than 'Harry Twenty'.

A squad led by Chief Thrower was sent to retrieve Harry when he and Genghis had escaped from the Rock in a home-made space capsule. The fugitives ended up on a small island in the Pacific. To cover the guards' tracks Chief Thrower supervised the incineration of an entire village of islanders.

Chief Thrower returned Harry to the High Rock (Genghis having been killed on Earth). Harry and Big Red One, who had also tried to escape, were due to be executed at dawn. When the execution party was taking them to the shuttle bay the two condemned men overpowered Chief Thrower and the other guards — Thrower being killed by Harry with a blaster shot to the chest — and threw them out of the Rock's airlock.
