History[]

Claw Carver is a character from the 2000 AD strip Flesh. A despicable, cold-blooded man, he ran a small colony in the Cretaceous era he dubbed Carver City. 'Claw' got his name when a Deinonychus (literally, a 'terrible claw') bit off his right hand, and he responded by killing the dinosaur, removing its huge talon and using it as a prosthesis.

Original series

When Earl Reagan came to Carver City with an injured Joe Brontowski, Carver attacked Reagan due to old bad blood between them. Then the colony was quickly overrun by dinosaurs in an attack led by the tyrannosaur Old One Eye. Carver blamed Reagan for this, as Old One Eye had followed him to Carver City because she was angry with him for putting her eye out. Persuaded by Reagan that they had no alternative, Carver helped him burn down the colony to kill the dinosaurs who had invaded it.

Although most of Carver City's population died, Carver fled with Reagan, Brontowski and several other men and quickly proved his evil by throwing one of the unnamed men to the dinosaurs during their escape. After an arduous trek through hostile terrain, the only people to make it back to Trans-Time Base 3 were Carver, Reagan and Brontowski. Carver automatically decided to make himself very chummy with the Flesh Controller, while secretly playing him and looting the base of its gold reserves.

Eventually Base 3 was overrun in another attack led by Old One Eye. Carver left the Controller and the other for dead as he fled to a time machine where he had stored his gold. Before he escaped however, Reagan saw Carver trying to flee and damaged his ship's controls during a brief scuffle before he left. The effect of this damage was to leave Carver stranded in time.

New series

It later emerged that Claw Carver had been married to a woman called Janie B. Good and fathered a daughter, Vegas Carver. He was captured in the time lanes and ordered to kill his daughter, an eco-terrorist who had been helping the dinosaurs fight back against Trans-Time and their government accomplices, or be killed himself. But Carver had a secret mission of his own: to get revenge on Pastor Sunday, a 'man of god' who had murdered Carver's wife. He finally accomplished this by shooting Sunday and then watching as the screaming cleric was swallowed whole by Gorehead, a huge tyrannosaur.
