It's Mean Angel's 21st birthday. Pa tells him that his present is in a safety deposit box in a Texas City bank. Mean steals the present (a box of his favourite synthi-chox) and is arrested. This, the narrator reveals, was Pa's plan all along. "As Pa Angel always says — a boy ain't a man less'n he's done time!"
