Scraps was launched by publisher James Henderson (also the publisher of Funny Folks, effectively the first comic) on 29th August 1883. It was titled Scraps because it was compiled in the manner of a scrapbook from various items subtitled 'Literary and Pictorial, Curious and Amusing'. In 1910, it became the colour comic Merry Thought. Material from Scraps was reprinted in early editions of the long running Comic Cuts.
