History

Carlos Sanchez Robo-Stogie was a robotic, ambulatory Cuban cigar given to Robo-Hunter Sam C Slade by the 'parents' of his idiot assistant Hoagy in order to help him stop smoking (Stogie was effectively the robot equivalent of a nicotine patch). With a personality reminiscent of a cross between Speedy Gonzales and Eli Wallach's character in 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly', Stogie — who in moments of stress or excitement would invariably shout "Ay, Caramba!" — was bloodthirsty, thrill-seeking, and utterly devoted to Sam, who he doggedly insisted was "the greatest robo-hunter een all the worl'," despite Sam's persistent irritation at his hero worship.

Stogie aided Sam on numerous cases, until Sam finally got rich and retired to a tropical island for 51 years — after which Stogie, appalled that Sam had given up what Stogiie believed was his true calling and gone to seed, coerced Hoagy into helping him get Sam back to work. This they did by first drugging Sam and packing him off to an isolated island health farm for two years, and then embezzling and spending all his money so that he would have no choice but to resume robo-hunting. A less than grateful Sam left the two robots in a pawn shop but later reclaimed them.

Since Sam's subsequent (re)retirement, Stogie has passed into the service of his granddaughter, Samantha Slade.

Powers and abilities

Nicotine; tiny grappling hook (used when working undercover).

Transportation

S. S. Dunhuntin (stolen from Sam).

Notes

  • In the early 1990s, Stogie appeared occasionally in the rebooted Robo-Hunter strip by Mark Millar, Peter Hogan and others, but these stories may now be considered apocryphal.
  • Stogie seems slightly less ridiculous as a character since the invention of the electronic cigarette. The creation of a real-life Carlos Sanchez Robo-Stogie is now surely only a matter of time. E-Lites now market an E-Stogie called an EGar!

Trivia

Stogie was named in honour of legendary 2000 AD artist Carlos Ezquerra.
